Mills tower called at present Pimentel Tower in tribute to the name of a soldier who helped Catholic Kings to conquer Málaga at the end of the XVth. It is located between San Miguel street and “La Cuesta del Tajo” street in the way that leads to Bajondillo’s beach.

Pimentel Tower was built more than 700 years ago, around year 1.300 and is located at the top of a hill being part of a wide range of defensive towers developed by the Nasrid all along the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. It was of crucial importance for the Kingdom of Granada that dominated the province of Málaga between the XIIIth and the XVth centuries.

The tower was built with mudwall and is 12 meters in height with a solid basement, two floors, windows and a large terrace. Guardians of the Kingdom of Granada guarded possible intruders arriving by sea.

Around Pimentel Tower a little and modest miller district was created which is now Torremolinos. In fact, this monument is a historic reference in the city center. At the moment, the inside can’t be visited.

Next point5

Iglesia San Miguel Arcangel

The devotion of the population of Torremolinos to archangel Michael has a documentary evidence in the file of the Cathedral of Malaga where there is a reference to Saint Michael Chapel of Torre Molino being bishop of the diocese José Molina Lario.

The chapel was built in 1718. The current church and parish was built in 1718 and set up on the ancient chapel close to the edge of the cliff “El Banjoncillo” which is the highest point that was once the place where mills were founded under the protection of Pimentel tower.

Close to the edge of the cliff some battery cannons occupied this concrete part of the town where stream passed. Water coming from natural springs moved the mills of the town, some mills where placed in San Miguel street. At last water flew into the sea.

When Málaga decided to stock up on Torremolino’s water between the end of the XIXth century and the beginning of the XXth, bend hadTh no reason to exist due to the progress of the technological modernity and milling industry was closed.

The naming of Saint Michael as patron saint of Torremolinos dated before the XVIIIth century when the chapel was built. It is not to be surprised at the fact that this popular devotion starts when Catholic Kings conquered the lands of Malaga at the end of the XVth century.

Since the Vth many towns adopted as patron saint the warrior archangel Michael in the belief that being superior and more powerful than the other Saints, he was worthy of defending the population and assuring harvest. No matter if protectors are gods or angels, at present is still the deep feeling of a devotee town.
